Title:
Antique Burmese Mandalay Period Standing Buddha. Wood-carved. Myanmar 19th Century.
Impressive Burmese Mandalay Buddha. Myanmar. Height: 90.17cm
Description:
A superb 19th century Sacred Temple Statue of an unusual Burmese Standing Buddha, considered to be one of the early representations of the Buddha from the Mandalay Period. Hand-carved from auspicious Teakwood, the figure is depicted standing with feet firmly planted on a small round lotus plinth, in the Gesture of Meditation, performed with both hands outstretched at both sides in mudra, while holding the medicinal 'Myrobalan' fruit in the right hand. As with Mandalay style images the face is oval, with a wide forehead and pointed chin, arched eyebrows connect above downcast inlaid glass eyes, a straight nose with flared nostrils, and a small distinct mouth. Buddha's head is covered by small hair curls surmounted by a hemispherical 'Ushnisha', domed at the top. Buddha is clothed in a elegantly carved 'Uttarasanga' robe worn in the 'Closed' mode covering both shoulders, and draped with a long undulating end flap folded decoratively to the mid-section. The 'Antaravasaka' covers the body from the waist to the knees. The contoured body is completely lost under his heavy robe that is deeply undercut and has multiple layered folds inset at the bottom hem. As with traditional Mandalay Period Buddha figures his garment is featureless at the back.
The figure is well proportioned and intricately carved with detailed features, decorated with Thayo lacquer, inlaid glass, mirrors, and hand-painted in a maroon lacquer pigment with remnants of gold gilding.
